The old roof comes off down to the decking, and that is when the real condition of the roof shows itself: soft spots, old repairs, nail holes, decking that has taken water. Anything rotten gets replaced, because new shingles over bad decking will fail early no matter how well they are laid.

Ice-and-water barrier in the valleys and around penetrations, synthetic underlayment across the field, new flashing where the roof meets walls and chimneys, then shingles. Flashing is worth paying attention to: it is a small part of the bill and a large share of the leaks we get called out to fix on other people's work.
A reroof is the cheapest moment ventilation will ever be fixable, because the roof is already open. A roof that cannot breathe cooks its own shingles from underneath and runs up the cooling bill through a North Texas summer. Unbalanced intake and exhaust is worth raising before the tear-off, not after the new roof is on top of it.

How long does a roof replacement take?
Most single-family reroofs are a one-day job once the materials are on site. Larger or steeper roofs, and anything that turns up significant decking damage after tear-off, can run into a second day. You will know the plan before work starts.
Do I need to be home while you work?
No. We do the walkthrough and the plan with you up front, and you are welcome to be there, but the work itself does not need you on site.
What happens if you find rotten decking?
It gets replaced. Decking is the one thing that can change the number after work starts, because nobody can see it until the old roof is off, which is why it is worth being shown what was found rather than just reading a line on an invoice.
