What a metal roofing job involves.
Metal roofing lasts substantially longer than asphalt and handles Texas sun and hail differently. It is a bigger investment up front and a different install, so it is worth understanding what you are buying.
The main split is between standing-seam and exposed-fastener systems. Standing-seam hides the fasteners under the raised seam, so there is nothing on the surface for water or UV to work on, and the panels can move as they expand and contract. Exposed-fastener panels are cheaper and quicker to fit, but the screws and their rubber washers sit out in the weather and eventually become the maintenance item.

Where the details matter.
Metal moves more than asphalt as it heats and cools, which is why the detailing matters so much. Panels need room to expand, and clips, closures and flashings have to allow for it. A metal roof that fails early has usually been pinned rather than allowed to move.
On hail, metal behaves differently from asphalt. It can dent without losing waterproofing, so a hail-damaged metal roof is often cosmetically marked while still functionally sound. Whether that is claimable depends on your policy, and some policies specifically exclude cosmetic damage on metal.

How long does a metal roof last?
Considerably longer than asphalt, and the fastening system usually determines the difference. Standing-seam has no exposed fasteners to degrade, while exposed-fastener panels need their screws and washers checked periodically.
Is metal better than shingles for hail?
It resists puncture well but can dent. The roof usually stays watertight, so the question becomes cosmetic. Some policies exclude cosmetic hail damage on metal, so it is worth reading yours.
Is a metal roof noisy in rain?
Far less than people expect on a home. It goes over decking and underlayment rather than open framing, which is what made old barn roofs loud.
Can you put metal over an existing roof?
Sometimes it is possible, but we prefer a tear-off. Going over an old roof hides the condition of the decking, and the decking is the thing everything else fastens to.
