Gutter Replacement

What a gutter replacement job involves.

Gutters are the part of a storm claim homeowners most often leave on the table. They hang off the same fascia line the roof edge does, they face straight up at the sky, and they are made of aluminum thin enough that hail dents it. When an adjuster is on site for the roof, the gutters are already in the scope of what is being looked at.

Aluminium does not hide damage well. A hailstorm that bruised the shingles will usually have left a row of dimples along the top of the gutter and across the downspouts, and unlike a shingle bruise you can see it from the driveway. That visibility cuts both ways: it is the easiest damage to document, and the easiest to forget to mention.

The Difference

Where the details matter.

Function is the other reason to deal with them at the same time. A gutter that sags, separates at a seam or overshoots at the corner sends water down the fascia and behind the boards rather than out to the downspout. That is how a roof-edge problem turns into rotten fascia, a soaked soffit, and eventually water in the wall.

Replacing gutters during a reroof is simply cheaper than doing it later. The old gutters usually have to come off for the tear-off anyway, the fascia is exposed and can be repaired properly while it is visible, and the new run goes up against a finished roof edge rather than being worked around one.

Custom gutter goes up in a continuous run cut to the house instead of in jointed sections, which removes most of the seams a gutter leaks at. Sizing matters as well: a roof with a lot of area draining to one corner needs more capacity there than a standard section provides, and undersized gutters overshoot in heavy rain no matter how well they are hung.

If the roof is being looked at, the gutters are worth looking at in the same visit. We check them during the free inspection whether or not they turn into part of the job.

Before You Call

Gutter Replacement, answered.

Are damaged gutters covered by a hail claim?

They can be. Gutters and downspouts are part of the exterior and are commonly included when a storm claim is filed for the roof. Whether they are covered depends on your policy and what the adjuster documents, which is why it helps to have them inspected before the adjuster visit rather than after.

Should gutters be replaced at the same time as the roof?

Usually, yes. The old gutters generally have to come off for the tear-off, the fascia behind them is exposed and can be repaired while it is visible, and the new run goes up against a finished roof edge. Doing it as separate jobs means paying twice to work in the same place.

What is the difference between custom and sectional gutter?

Custom gutter is cut in a continuous run to fit the house, so there are no joints along the length of a run. Sectional gutter is assembled from standard pieces, and every joint is somewhere a leak can start.

My gutters overflow in heavy rain. Are they broken?

Not necessarily. Overflow is often a capacity or a pitch problem rather than a fault: too much roof draining into too little gutter, not enough fall toward the downspout, or a blockage. An inspection tells you which of the three it is.

Do you repair gutters, or only replace them?

Both. A sagging or separated section, a failed seam or a detached downspout can often be re-secured. Replacement makes sense when the run is dented across its length or the fascia behind it has gone.
