Exterior Painting

What a exterior painting job involves.

Most of the painting we do starts as roofing. A tear-off exposes fascia that has not been seen in years, a gutter replacement leaves bare board where the old run was fastened, and a storm repair leaves new trim next to weathered trim. None of that is finished until it is painted.

Fascia and soffit are the parts that matter most and get the least attention. They sit directly under the roof edge, they are the first thing water reaches when a gutter fails, and they are painted from a ladder rather than from the ground, which is why they are usually the first paint on a house to go. Bare or peeling fascia is not a cosmetic problem: unpainted wood at the roof edge absorbs water and softens.

The Difference

Where the details matter.

Preparation is where an exterior paint job is won or lost, and it is the part that is invisible once the job is done. Failed paint has to come off rather than be painted over, damaged board has to be replaced rather than filled, bare wood needs a primer, and the surface has to be dry. Paint applied over any of those failures fails again in the same place, usually within a season.

North Texas is hard on exterior finishes. Long hot summers with direct sun break down the binder in a coating, and the swing between a hundred-degree afternoon and a freeze pushes wood through enough movement to open joints and lift film. Materials that hold up here are chosen for that cycle rather than for coverage on a chart.

The practical case for doing paint alongside roof work is access and sequence. The ladders and the crew are already at the roof line, the boards that need replacing are already exposed, and the finish goes on after the disruptive work rather than before it, so it does not get damaged by the job that follows.

We also do full exterior repaints, interior repair and repaint after a leak has been fixed, and staining and sealing for fences and exterior woodwork.

Before You Call

Exterior Painting, answered.

Do you paint the whole house, or only trim?

Both. A lot of the work is fascia, soffit and trim alongside a roof or gutter job, but full exterior repaints are part of what we do.

Should painting happen before or after roof work?

After. Roofing and gutter work involve ladders against the roof edge, tear-off debris and board replacement, all of which can mark fresh paint. Paint goes on last so it stays as it was applied.

Why does the fascia keep peeling?

Usually because water is reaching it. A gutter that overflows, sags or leaks at a seam keeps the board wet, and paint will not hold on wood that does not dry out. The gutter line is worth checking before the board is repainted again.

Do you replace rotten wood before painting?

Yes. Soft or rotten board is replaced rather than filled and painted over. Paint over failed wood hides the problem for a season and then fails with it.

Can interior repainting be part of a storm claim?

It can be, where the interior damage came from the storm. Ceiling and wall repair after a roof leak is common in a claim scope, but the leak itself has to be fixed first or the repair will not last.
