What a attic ventilation job involves.
Attic ventilation is the part of a roof system nobody thinks about until something else goes wrong, and it quietly shortens the life of everything above it.
The principle is simple. Cool air enters low, at the soffits, and warm air leaves high, at the ridge. That movement carries heat and moisture out of the attic. When it works, the attic stays close to outdoor temperature. When it does not, a North Texas attic can run far hotter than the air outside.

The Difference
Where the details matter.
That heat has somewhere to go. It bakes the shingles from underneath, which ages them faster than the sun does from above, and it pushes into the living space below, which the air conditioning then has to fight all summer.
Moisture is the other half. Warm damp air that cannot escape condenses on the underside of the decking, and decking that stays damp softens over time. It is a slow failure that shows up as a soft roof rather than as a leak.
The most common fault we find is unbalanced rather than absent. Plenty of exhaust at the ridge with blocked or insufficient intake at the soffits means the system pulls air from wherever it can, often out of the house itself. Adding more exhaust vents to a roof with no intake makes it worse rather than better.
A reroof is the cheapest moment ventilation will ever be fixable, because the roof is already open. It is worth raising before the tear-off rather than after the new roof is on top of it. We check intake and exhaust balance during every free inspection.

Attic Ventilation, answered.
How do I know if my attic ventilation is bad?
Common signs are an attic that is far hotter than outside, upstairs rooms that will not cool, unusually high summer cooling bills, or shingles ageing faster on one part of the roof. An inspection confirms it.
Will more roof vents fix it?
Not on their own, and it can make things worse. Exhaust without matching intake at the soffits means the system pulls air from wherever it can, sometimes out of the conditioned space below. Intake and exhaust have to be balanced.
Does ventilation really affect how long a roof lasts?
Yes. Trapped heat ages shingles from underneath, and trapped moisture softens the decking they are nailed to. Both shorten the life of the roof above them.
When is the best time to fix it?
During a reroof. The roof is already open, so intake and exhaust can be corrected as part of the job rather than as separate work later.
